‘Let your home be a meeting house for the sages, and cover yourself with the dust of their feet, and drink in their words thirstily…’
Yosei Ben Yoezer. Died 161BC
The words of this Jewish rabbi were still echoing during the life and ministry of Jesus. It is not difficult to see their influence on the hospitality of Mary and Martha; the squabbling for proximity by the disciples; and the crowds hungry for Jesus’ instruction. But Jesus was a sage like no other. He was ‘Immanuel-God with us’.
It is no surprise then that for 2000 years Christians have held his words as timeless and universal.
However, do we really understand what he taught? God made his home among us; taking on the limitations of human incarnation by revealing himself at a specific time, in a specific space and through a specific culture—far from our own.
During this great age of teachers where religious factions were many and religious debate was robust, the mission of a rabbi was to become a living example of what it means to apply God’s Word to one’s life. The disciple sought to study the text, not only of Scripture but of the rabbi’s life. Even more than acquiring his master’s knowledge, he wanted to acquire his master’s character.
Join us as we lift the lid on this world to pursue a greater depth of understanding not just of what Jesus taught… but also how he made disciples… so we too can authentically walk in the dust of the Rabbi.

HOST: MARK PAVEY

Mark is passionate about quality, interactive and inspired teaching that unlocks the Scriptures for believers, so that they can mine the riches so often clouded by the distance of Time, Space and Culture.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
EXPECTATIONS
Aim:
To explore what it meant for Jesus the eternal word to become ‘Immanuel: God with Us’, in the specific context of first century Judaism.
Goal:
Develop a deep and nuanced understanding of the world of the Jewish sages and the often misunderstood and unspoken culture that forms their backdrop as a means to understand Jesus’ ministry .
Objectives:
- To explore the world of Gallilean sages and how Christ used its cultural peculiarities and methods to call, train and release disciples.
- We will aim to unlock his teaching and methodology which are so often clouded by the distance of Time, Space and Culture.
- To demonstrate how just a little insight into Jesus’ world helps us to understand the Gospels, the Mission of Jesus and our Destiny as Disciples.
- To illuminate how all rabbis (especially Jesus) leant on the Old Testament to train and equip their followers for the life of faith.
- To equip you on how to spot the rabbis teaching tricks.
- To help you understand what teacher Jesus is trying to do to you and the tools he used to do that.
Experience:
We will be giving dedicated time to connecting, teaching, interactive response, and Q&R.
Text:
The main conference translation will be the ESV.
